Biopharmaceutical Research Companies:
A Key Economic Force in New York State
Despite the deep recession, pharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies remain a potent economic force throughout New York and a new study shows the industry has strong potential for continued long-term growth. Highlights include:
- In New York State, biopharmaceutical companiesdirectly employed 55,446 workers and were responsible for a total of 130,464 jobs.
- The industry generated $29.1 billion in total economic output in 2006 and New York State is responsible for nearly seven percent of all direct biopharmaceutical output nationally.
- Biopharmaceutical employment 1996-2006 grew at a 1.8 percent rate, a full percentage point higher than the 0.8 percent growth rate for all other business sectors in the state.
- Pharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies throughout the state paid $3.8 billion in wages to their employees three years ago and generated $121 million in state taxes and $845.6 million in federal and Social Security taxes.
- New York last year was second in the nation with 5,053 clinical testing sites for potential new medicines.
